We are delighted to confirm that conditional funding to replace the astro turf pitch at our home ground in Tywyn has been secured. This has been a partnership between Byw’n Iach (who run our local leisure centre on behalf of Cyngor Gwynedd), Hoci Cymru, Sport Wales, Mantell Gwynedd, Cyngor Gwynedd and Clwb Hoci Dysynni Hockey Club. The project has also received great local support from Tywyn Town Council, Neuadd Pendre Bingo Night, Aberdyfi Golf Club, Chris Davies and family, Bob and Leigh Pountney, Chesworth Construction, Coop Fund, DC Auto Repairs, Middleton Glass, Tywyn Baptist Church, Aberdovey Ice Cream, Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn and Ysgol Penybryn.
The work is expected to begin in January 2026 following comprehensive consultation, survey work and tendering to give the community the best possible surface for the next 20 years. In addition to the above supporters, we are indebted to the whole community for letters of support, donations to our Crowdfunder and encouragement for the project as a whole. To be clear, whilst hockey will be a key beneficiary, the pitch is a community asset open to other sports such as football and rugby. If you are at all interested in getting involved, a warm welcome awaits you at our club. Many thanks to our friends and supporters, it is much appreciated.
Adrian Bennett, Chair Clwb Hoci Dysynni Hockey Club
We rely on having a pitch on which to train our club members, encourage and develop our youngsters, host events including junior tournaments and continue to be active in both men’s and women’s cup and league competitions. It is also used by our schools during the day, and by other sports clubs in the evenings and weekends. Our pitch has had almost 25 years of good use and is now in need of a revamp; a recent survey has shown that the shock pad and surface need replacing to bring it up to modern FIH standards.
The funds raised will contribute to the renovations required to lay a new surface at the current site in Tywyn. The good news is that up to 90% of the funding has already been confirmed by Hoci Cymru and the Cymru Football Foundation, and with the support of Byw’n Iach. So we are looking to our friends and the community to help us raise the remaining 10% (approx.).
Any funding raised surplus to what is required to fund the new pitch will be used for other pitch improvements such as dugouts and storage.
As well as being used nearly every day of the week by the hockey club, the pitch is currently also used by Tywyn High School during the school days and also by other local sports clubs. It is the only full sized pitch in over an hour radius, with members travelling from as far as Aberystwyth to the south and Dyffryn Ardudwy to the north. The sport and physical activity that is enabled by our pitch has an immensely positive impact on the health and mental well being of our community across all ages.
Equipping the town with a facility like this, that is safe for future use, ensures inclusive access for all whether that be for groups playing games for fun, training and nurturing our local talent or for social and competitive use. Securing the next 25 years of a playable surface, will have an immeasurably positive impact on our local community, fostering a strong sense of ownership and belonging.
